Copenhagen with Young Kids: Where to Stay, What to Do, and Where to Eat
Copenhagen is a fantastic city to explore with a toddler, offering a mix of green spaces, playgrounds, and family-friendly eateries. We recently visited and stayed in the charming neighborhood of Østerbro, which proved to be a great base for exploring the city. Here’s everything you need to know to plan a smooth and enjoyable trip to Copenhagen with young children.

Where to Stay: Why Østerbro is a Great Choice
We found Østerbro to be an excellent neighborhood for families. It’s quieter than the city center but still well-connected, making it easy to explore the best of Copenhagen. Many accommodations in this area offer family-friendly amenities, and our Airbnb even provided a pack & play, which made our stay much more comfortable. The neighborhood is also home to lovely parks, wide sidewalks, and plenty of cafes where kids are welcome.
Must-Visit Attractions with a Toddler
The King’s Garden
One of our favorite experiences was spending time at The King’s Garden. It’s a beautiful, spacious park where our toddler could run around freely. The playgrounds within the garden were a huge hit, and we could relax while enjoying some delicious food from nearby spots. The historical setting and well-maintained green spaces make it a wonderful escape for kids and adults. We came back here and spent time relaxing every day in Copenhagen.

Playgrounds Throughout the City
Copenhagen is filled with playgrounds, making it incredibly family-friendly. Our toddler had the best time exploring different play areas, which gave us a great opportunity to slow down and enjoy the surroundings. Whether in The King’s Garden or smaller neighborhood parks, there’s always a place for kids to play. Some standout playgrounds include the one at Fælledparken, which has different themed play areas, and the amazing Tower Playground, designed like a mini version of Copenhagen’s skyline.
Walking Around Nyhavn
Nyhavn is a must-see in Copenhagen, and while it’s known for its colorful buildings and harbor views, it’s also a great place for a stroll with a stroller. The atmosphere is lively, and it’s easy to find a spot to sit and enjoy the view while your little one takes in the sights. If you have time, consider taking a canal tour from Nyhavn, as they’re stroller-friendly and provide a relaxing way to see the city from the water.

Tivoli Gardens
Tivoli Gardens is one of the world’s oldest amusement parks and a magical place for families. While some of the rides may be geared toward older kids, there are plenty of toddler-friendly attractions, including gentle carousels and play areas. The park’s fairy-tale atmosphere, live entertainment, and beautiful gardens make it a memorable stop for families.
The National Museum of Denmark’s Children’s Museum
If you’re looking for an indoor activity, the Children’s Museum inside the National Museum of Denmark is a fantastic option. It features hands-on exhibits where kids can dress up, play with historical toys, and explore interactive displays. It’s the perfect place for toddlers to engage in creative play while parents take a break.
Best Places to Eat with a Toddler
Meyers Bageri – If you love pastries, this place is a must-visit. The baked goods here were unreal, and it’s a great spot to grab a quick breakfast or snack. Their cinnamon rolls and sourdough bread are particularly famous. We had the best chocolate croissant on our whole trip here!
Broens Street Food – This food market was one of the highlights of our trip. With so many food options, it was easy to find something everyone enjoyed. Plus, the open space allowed our toddler to move around freely while we ate. We recommend trying some Danish smørrebrød (open-faced sandwiches) and fresh seafood.
Ø12 Coffee and Eatery – A fantastic breakfast spot with great food and a welcoming atmosphere. The menu had plenty of options, making it a great place to start the day. Their avocado toast and coffee were delicious.
Granola – A charming, retro-style café with a cozy atmosphere. It’s known for its fantastic brunch options, and the friendly staff makes it an easy choice for families.
TorvehallerneKBH – This upscale food market is perfect for families looking for a variety of fresh and delicious options. With everything from fresh seafood and organic produce to Danish smørrebrød and pastries, there’s something for everyone. It’s also a great spot to grab a quick meal in between sightseeing stops.

Getting Around Copenhagen with a Toddler
Copenhagen is one of the most walkable cities we’ve visited, and we found that walking was the easiest way to get around. Public transportation was also very accessible, even with a stroller. Buses and trains accommodate strollers well, making it stress-free to move around the city.
For families looking to explore by bike, Copenhagen is one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world. Many bike rental shops offer cargo bikes, which can fit toddlers securely. If you’re comfortable cycling in a city, this can be a fun and convenient way to see more of Copenhagen.
