Exploring Capri, Italy: Top 7 Must-Do Day Trip Activities

Updated: Aug 10, 2023

Capri is a breathtaking island off the Amalfi Coast in the Bay of Naples. It is known for its landscapes, luxury shopping, and the Blue Grotto, a cave that glows bright blue due to sunlight passing through an underwater cave. It is the perfect day trip from the Amalfi Coast or Naples and one you will not be disappointed that you did. Below are the Top 7 Things To Do on a Day Trip to Capri, Italy.

Capri Boat Tour

Getting to Capri

You can grab a ferry from any town on the Amalfi Coast or Naples or spring for a private boat to take you there. Tickets for the ferry can be purchased in advance; from Positano, it takes about 30 minutes; from Sorrento, it takes about 20 minutes.

We opted to take a private boat to the island to experience the Faraglioni up close. The Faraglioni are the famous giant sea rock formations off the island's coast. Legend says that passing through and kissing in the 'Arch of Love' natural tunnel is a good omen for couples.

Once you arrive in Capri, here are some of the best things to do!

Grotto in Capri

#1 Blue Grotto

A visit to the Blue Grotto is a must-do if you can. The cave radiates with a bright blue reflection that illuminates the water. Unfortunately, the seas were rough when we visited, and no one could enter. Although we didn't see the Blue Grotto specifically, we could see some similar caves on our boat tour.

#2 Boat Tour Around the Island

If you took a ferry to Capri, a smaller boat tour around the island is ideal for seeing the Faraglioni up close. You can also see the magnificent landscapes and hear more history about the island from your captain.

#3 Convertible Taxi

The public transportation on the island is very accessible, and we could hop right on a bus to go up from the coast to the town. If you are taking the ferry, the Funicular is located at the Marina Grande, where you will be docking, and take you to the Piazza Umberto. We took the convertible taxi back to the boat on our way down from the town.

View in Capri

#4 Take in the Views

The views in Capri are breathtaking, and worth some time to look out to the Amalfi coast and the Faraglioni. The views from any direction are impressive. Having a nice meal or drink is the perfect way to enjoy the fantastic views.

#5 Shopping

The beautiful streets of Capri are lined with luxury stores that are perfect to pop into or do some window shopping. If you aren't looking to splurge, souvenir shops and boutiques provide more modest shopping.

#6 Chairlift

The Monte Solaro Chairlift will take you to the highest part of the island for some unforgettable panoramic views. It is a single-seat and open-air tranquil ride to the top of Capri. Those looking to get some steps in can opt to hike up, and the chairlift is available to take you back down.

Capri's blue water

#7 Trying Limoncello

The Amalfi Coast and Capri are known for their Limoncello, Italy's second most popular liqueur. It is made from lemon zest, water, alcohol, and sugar and is typically enjoyed after dinner. There’s a mystery behind where the drink originated, although it is theorized that it was on the island of Capri.

Visiting Capri from the Amalfi Coast or Naples is a perfect way to spend a day. There is so much natural beauty to see on and around the island. It is no wonder people flock to see it.
